活動レポート

The venue for the 41st ESDR annual meeting was held in Barcelona, which provided a beautiful Mediterranean backdrop for the international meeting that hosted over 1000 attendees from 42 countries. The conference started on Wednesday 7th with the 1st Symposium on Natural Gene Therapy of the skin consisting of an impressive program with speakers such as Jouni Uitto, Dennis Roop and John McGrath. It was particularly interesting to hear about the phenomena of revert mosaicism and how experts in the field envisage how induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) may be utilized to provide potential future therapies for patients with genetic skin diseases. Alongside the gene therapy symposium also ran the 9th Meeting of the European Epidermal Barrier Research Network, the European Society for Pigment Cell Research Meeting and the European Association of Dermato-ncology Symposium. The following 3 days of the conference saw an excellent selection of abstracts presented in the plenary and concurrent sessions, with guest lectures from Manolis Pasparakis and Richard Flavell. Richard Gallo gave the Rene Touraine Lecture and Martine Bagot the Rudi Cormane Lecture. Fellow Keio Dermatologists Takeshi Ouichi, Kazuae Yoshida gave excellent oral presentations and I myself presented the initial parts of my research at Keio as a poster presentation, for which I gained useful feedback from others. The busy schedule did not leave much time for sightseeing but I did manage to visit the Sagrada Familia, the Picasso Museum and meet with fellow researchers from all parts of the globe.

This was the first international Dermatological Research meeting I have attended, which I thoroughly enjoyed. In particular, I would like to thank the Keio GCOE program: I hope that schemes like this will continue in the future to allow young scientists in Japan the experience of attending such conferences abroad.
