活動レポート

I have assigned to participate the Key forum in Kumamoto University during September 8to 9, 2001. I was particular excited as this is my first time to visit Kumamoto city. Kumamoto city was famous for Kumamoto castle and for its delicious food. I was very lucky that I was able to enjoy both during this trip. Not to mention, I was able to visit the beautiful Kumamoto University where the Key forum was hold.

In these days, the special lectures were fully programmed, and it was a great learning experience for me. Well-known speakers around the world including those from my home country have brought their most cutting edge researches to this key forum. The lectures were carefully divided into 4 different sections, which made it much easier for us to follow, and made the presentations easy to understand too. Research topic involves regenerative medicine was really interesting, for example, Dr. Taro Toyoda brought their research on generation of pancreatic beta cells from human ES/iPS cell towards regenerative therapy for diabetes, they are able to induce ES/iPS cell into insulin-producing cell around 5~10% and they have also establish few compounds (unpublished) that can facilitate the differentiation of human ES/iPS; Dr. Nicolas Barker brought his research on Lgr5 stem cell in self-renewal and cancer, it was a really great research on how they found Lgr5 marks adult stem cells of the small intestine. Moreover, Dr. Shinya Yamanaka has brought his most update research on the story of iPS. They have found that Glis1 has improve the efficient of iPS formation from fibroblast by 3, 4 folds. At last, Dr. Toshio Soda and Dr. Hideyuki Okano from our university has also brought their newest groundbreaking researches, including Dr. Okano has successfully make iPS from Alzheimer's patient.

During these two days, I was able to share my research work on characterization of common marmoset spermatogenic cell with people from different places. I was also able to present and discuss my work with Dr. Sasaki, who is very well known in germ cell searches. This is the opportunity for young researcher like us to make our connection into the field. I also think GCOE key forum has served its purpose at making connection among young researchers theirselves. There was also an award for all the posters presentated. All the young researchers really make their effort to present their posters to the lecture speakers and the guests. Dr. Kawase from Okano lab (Keio Univ.) was proudly took the 1st price from the key forum.

I have taken a lot from this conference and it has been an amazing experience for me. I am really grateful for GCOE, not only they have provide me this opportunity to learn many cutting edge searches but also allow me to visit different city in Japan. They have also arranged great accommodation and travel plan for us thatwere really amazing. I am truly grateful.
