Clinical Elective

International Student Elective Program

The International Student Elective Program welcomes applications from students attending medical schools outside Japan who wish to undertake clinical elective placements at Keio University School of Medicine and university hospital, located in the heart of Tokyo.

To apply, please carefully follow the instructions below.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • be in their final year of study at a medical school or dental school outside of Japan at the start of the elective program. Dental students are welcome to apply for a placement in the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Department.
  • have completed basic bedside training in all core clinical subjects prior to the start of the elective program.
  • be in good academic standing at their home medical school.
  • be sufficiently proficient in English to benefit from the program.

General Information

  • The program is conducted in English.
  • Students may participate in the program for a maximum of 12 weeks, in a maximum of 4 departments.
  • As a rule, each clinical department can receive only one participant for a maximum 4 weeks at a time, with the exception of the departments below:
    • Pulmonary Medicine - maximum 2 weeks
    • General and Gastrointestinal Surgery - maximum 2 weeks
    • Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery - maximum 2 weeks
    • Radiation Oncology - maximum 3 weeks
    • Dentistry and Oral Surgery - maximum 2 weeks
    • Institute for Integrated Sports Medicine - maximum 2 weeks
    If you have any special requests, we might be able to accommodate them.
  • We can accept a maximum of 4 students per academic year from the same medical school.
  • Clinical elective placements are not offered on weekends, Japanese national holidays, Keio University holidays on January 10 and April 23, or during the Keio University Hospital holiday period from December 30 to January 4. Some departments may have other periods of unavailability.

Tuition

Tuition is 2,100 JPY per weekday. The total amount must be paid in cash at the Office of Student Services on the first day of the program. Please be sure to prepare exact change.

Insurance

Please also be aware that visiting students are required to be covered by liability insurance and personal health insurance. Please ensure that you are covered before coming to Japan. If you are not covered by insurance you are responsible for covering any medical or liability costs.

Accommodation

On the application form, applicants must indicate their desire to stay in our Daikyocho Guest Rooms, located near the medical campus. The rooms are equipped with a bathroom, shower, kitchen facilities, washing machine, television, wired internet connection, and other amenities.

The Office of Student Services is responsible for assigning rooms at Daikyocho, and will provide you with a key on the first working day of your stay, and assist you with moving in.

The room fee is 2,000 JPY per day, which covers all utilities. The total amount must be paid in cash at the Accounting & Finance Office by the last working day before your check out from our guest house. Please be sure to prepare exact change.

Because the number of rooms at Daikyocho is limited, we might not be able to offer a room. In that case, please search for your own accommodations in a hotel or other guest house facility such as weekly/monthly rental apartment.

  3. Immunization Record (PDF) signed by authorized person
  4. Curriculum Vitae
  5. Letter of recommendation from applicant's academic supervisor
  6. Official school transcript (original, in English)
  7. Photocopy of an English proficiency test score certificate (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC) taken within the last 2 years (this item is not required from applicants whose first language is English.)
    Note: Proficiency in English is required for the program. If you have any Japanese language ability, please indicate it in your application so we can arrange additional opportunities.

Application Consideration

Application materials must arrive 3 months prior to the start of the program at the very latest, but no more than 1 year prior.

Applications are evaluated on their overall strength, and placements are offered to successful applicants on a first come, first serve basis. Preference is given to students from our partner institutions when we receive conflicting applications. Please note that spaces are limited so in some cases a position may not be available.

Application processing will take approximately two months. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by email from the Office of Student Services.

Arrival at Keio

On the first day of the program, a one-hour orientation will be held at 8:45 a.m. at the Office of Student Services, first floor of Koyosha, and afterward the participants will be guided to their rotation department.MapExternal Links
